For those in Germany, Vielen Dank fuer Eure Notizen.
Un especial Hola to those in Santiago, Chile and the Schlottfeldts in Brazil. And "Hello" to cousins in Australia and South Africa and Denmark as well as all around the United States.
In October of 1998 we were lucky to find new charts brought from Germany to Chile by Carmen Schlotfeldt Leighton's Great Grandfather. It clears up many questions and makes links back to 1646 and earlier in Klein Flintbek, Schleswig Holstein, Germany. (Near Kiel). Those names have been worked into our Family Tree file and make solid connections with families with whom we have been communicating in Germany. In 1998 we found Carl Schlotfeldt in Johannesburg, So. Africa, with roots in Flintbek. We now have linked their roots with those in America as well.
In June of 1999, Suzette Schlotfeldt of Denmark had worked some of her ancestors back to Kiel in the 1800s and we are looking for more links there. Also, Tom Roar Eikebrokk of Norway is researching the reported old spelling of "Slotvelt" with his newly discovered Schlotfeldt ancestors who went to Norway from Schleswig Holstein and changed their name to "Skyliholdt" (the name of the farm). One of our German cousins is certain that the old Danish spelling of our name was "Slotueld or Slotveld".
We also keep finding new updates and additions to the tree via incoming and outgoing inquiries from the World wide web. Of many examples, in Sept. 2002, we heard from Alexej and Vera Schlotfeldt-Schaefer from Germany. Their ancestor, H-J Schlotfeldt told us he migrated from Chile to Germany.
We found Schlottfeldt family (double "tt") from Brazil and were able to link them back to our Kiel area root locations. They are still backtracking their family story. The principal researchers are Gustavo Schlottfeldt, his sister Luisa McEwen and his brother Carlos. Very interesting history.
We have been very lucky, particularly in 2003 and since, when several branches of the family made contact with us and exchanged important information. Some were from branches that evolved with spellings of SCHLOTFELT, SCHLOTFELD, and even SCHLODTFELDT. We have linked almost all back to the descendants of JOCHIM SCHLOTFELDT of Klein Flintbek, Germany. To the point that I believe that if your ancestors had any of these spellings, you are probably related.
PRONOUNCIATION: There seem to be just two ways the name is said. The most common rhymes with the English "Boat". The second rhymes the first part with the english "Cot". the second part is consistently the Germanic "felt" sound rather than the English sounding "field". But I suppose one of us probably does say that somewhere in the world. To hear my pronunciation, go to the link titled: "Fay's Voice Notes" and turn on your speakers. (I'll be adding the link as I build this site. Friend, Clarke Isackson has been kind enough to lend me the space on one of his sites to do this. )
At present, this web site is still under construction. It will be used to replace one we have had for years on AOL's Hometown. In November of 2008, they abandoned all their siteholders and the links we have established for FayJan AOL pages on genealogy search sites around the world, now lead "nowhere". We'll have added 2 more Pages with information about our family's migration and the cousins who have helped build the Family Tree with over 5,000 names. We'll be glad to try to help you make your family's links.
We (Janice and I) are originally from Iowa, then Nebraska, and now retired outside the Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona area in a small golfing community named. "Rio Verde". It's surrounded by the Tonto National Forest, The McDowell Mountain Regional park of 22,000 acres and the Fort McDowell Indian Community. We love it. Our main email contact is still: FayJan@aol.com
